Memorial
On Friday, May 17, 2002, the Louisiana Law Enforcement Officers Memorial
was dedicated with over 600 families and police officers in attendance.
Mrs. Melanie Cannatella, Executive Director of the LLEOM, started
the dedication with a moving speech on how she became the Executive
Director after the death of her husband, Sergeant Ron Cannatella..
Ron was the President of the Police Association of New Orleans for
over 18 years and was a member of the New Orleans Police Department
for 29 years. Melanie touched on the fact that Ron wanted this memorial
built to honor the men and women who died in the line of duty. It
was after the death of Police Officer Ronald Williams, who was killed
in the line of duty on March 4, 1995, when Ron began thinking of
what he could do to make this a reality. It took a long time for
this monument to become a reality. However, Ron's dream was realized
after numerous fund raisers, and the untiring efforts of the LLEOM
Executive Board.
There are 334 names of police officers, sheriff's deputies, state
troopers, and federal agents who are listed dating back as far as
1870. Unfortunately, we already have a name to add for the year
2002. We can only pray that all law enforcement officers who protect
this state are kept out of harms way; however, we must face reality
that the men and women who protect us are putting their life on
the line everyday to make our community safe.
For those who would like to visit the LLEOM, it is located in the
Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Boulevard in New
Orleans. Every May during police week, the LLEOM will have a roll
call for those officers who have died in the line of duty the previous
year. Look for future information on the date for the May 2003 memorial
service. If you have any questions, please call Rhonda McCord, Treasurer
of the LLEOM, at (504) 827-1386.
The LLEOM cost nearly $70,000. We have raised $60,000, yet we still
have the remaining $10,000 to raise. If you would like to make a
tax deductible donation, please send it to:
