| President’s
Message April 6, 2006
Since Hurricane Katrina, the men and women of the New Orleans
Police department have been under the most pressure, scrutiny, second-guessing,
and stress than ever before. It seems that anytime anyone makes
a complaint on a police officer, even if it’s anonymous, that
officer seems to be considered guilty until he or she proves himself
innocent.
There have been several cases lately where police officers have
been accused of a violation and investigated by PID, where the officer
did not exercise their Constitutional Rights under the Police Officers
Bill of Rights. Under no circumstance should any PANO member allow
themselves to be questioned, interrogated, submit a written statement,
or relinquish any personal property to any member of PIB, OMI, FBI,
etc, without first contacting PANO. You have that right!
PANO representatives and attorneys are available on a 24-hour
basis, seven days a week. Members can contact the PANO office during
normal working hours at our new phone number (504) 942-2454. Any
time else, any member can call me personally on my cell phone, which
I have on 24 hours a day, at (504) 421-5951. Don’t hesitate
to call if you are or you think you are subject to a Departmental
investigation.
The bottom line is that every officer should remember that you
have a Police Officer Bill of rights and Criminal rights. Do not
be intimidated; use both of these rights.
There is no reason why Police Officers should have less rights
than the common criminal. We encourage our members to become active
and support our efforts.
David Benelli, President, PANO
